Saturday Social to the Star & Garter East Dean by Book-a-bus.

Saturday 20 June 2026

Laurie Dooley met Stephen Cox, Pete Luff and Richard Earl (sporting an Ealing Beer Festival T-shirt) at Chichester Cathedral bus stop. The bus arrived at 12:10, but two strangers got on first, also on their way to East Dean. The driver got lost in Singleton and had to do a U-turn. At S&G Stephen, Richard and Laurie got off, but Pete decided to stay on to visit West's Wood Fair in East Dean where Langham were supplying the beer tent. In S&G they had Bowman Swift One (NBSS 'Very Good') and (we think) Dave Best by Goldmark rebadged as 'The Star' (again NBSS 'Very Good'). Lots of South Downs Way cyclists came into the garden (huge dinner plate gears on their bikes). Food was pub grub, but with gastropub prices (sandwich of the day beef & horseradish at £12.00 - wow). Pete re-joined us here. The return bus arrived on time at 14:15; then back to Chi cathedral and the Old Cross for our Ale Trail stamp (and yes, they had found their stamp). Black Sheep bitter went down well (NBSS 'Very Good'); the GK house bitter was undrinkable, but replaced without demur. Then off to the Escapist, no cask, but the Rad Shirt Fridays keg wasn't freezing cold, so that was a bonus. No photos today as the official photographer was elsewhere.
