Boreen Walk Barnham to Arundel 25/04/26
25/04/26. I had planned this (called 'the Boring Walk') for 11th April, as it was reputedly the most boring day in history; well something interesting came up, so I had to move it. So now it's the Boreen walk (Boreen from the Irish 'little road').
Laurie Dooley by chance, met Jane Marston on the Bognor train to Barnham there we met Malcolm Vernone who had travelled by bus and Dave Taylor who had come from Chichester. At 11:25 we set off for the Murrell Arms which had changed their opening times from my recce and now didn't open until 12:00. Here we met Richard Earl. Undaunted, we continued up the Right-of Way, crossing the railway where Dave stopped to take pictures and got hooted at by the train driver in Barnham Station. We walked to The Holly Tree in Walberton, which true to form for my walks had no beer (no cask anyway), so after a cold Burning Sky Quest keg pint (too cold and v expensive), we set off again for Binsted, joined by Pete Luff who turned up later. As The Murrell Arms was closed, we took the opportunity to divert to The Black Horse and so glad we did; the Harvey's Sussex Best was superb (4.0 NBSS). Cyclists and walkers were welcomed, but not guests of the holiday cottage nearby; don't know why and didn't like to ask. Richard and Jane left us here; Richard to walk back to The Maypole, and Jane to get home in a timely fashion. Pete, Dave, Laurie and Malcolm decided to make tracks to The White Swan, but what a trek! Old Scotland Lane runs parallel to the A27 but you can't hear it. Google Earth says 27 minutes for this section, but it took us over an hour. Still The White Swan was made, but the Harvey's here wasn't so good. Onward to The King's Arms in Arundel, where a good choice of beers is always welcome. We decided to avoid the next pub which was to be The White Hart (Harvey's only tied house in Arundel). Laurie & Malcolm to the station and Pete & Dave to The Norfolk Tap.
